Events Guide: LIFE in the Cemetery, Sorauren Park info meeting, Green Toronto nominations

What: LIFE in the Cemetery, group exhibition of paintings and photography
When: January 18 - February 20
Where: Sidespace Gallery, 1080 St Clair Avenue West

Prospect Cemetery is the largest greenspace in our neighbourhood.  It is a stop along the flightway for migratory birds.  It is an arboretum where trees mature uncrowded, and expand to their natural shape. Within it are gravestones with slowly fading inscriptions, fading silk and top-heavy plastic flowers inclining toward the grass, a beech grove, stilled artillery and candles fizzled in the rain. Enter its gates, and we are invited to consider life amidst the dead. What here is transitory and what permanent?

What: Sorauren Park Fieldhouse Public Information Meeting
When: Jan 17, 2 pm
Where: Sorauren Park Fieldhouse, 50 Wabash Avenue

The fieldhouse in Roncesvalles Village's Sorauren Park opened last year and provides public washrooms, storage, meeting spaces and a kitchen for park visiters. The building used to be home to the offices for the Canadian Linseed Oil company, but has been renovated in to a useful public space. There will be an information session this weekend to discuss how visiters and members of the community can use this space.

Meet with representatives of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation to have your
questions answered:

• who can rent out the Fieldhouse
• permit policies and procedures
• how much does it cost
• what times are available

What: Green Toronto Awards nominations

Also, the Green Toronto Awards, which takes place on April 23, 2009 at the Green Living show, are currently accepting nominations. The City invites residents to nominate any organization, company, or individual who is making a difference. The nomination deadline is Friday, February 27 at 5 pm.

"Torontonians are environmentalists by nature and we should celebrate all those who are making a real difference in our city," said Mayor David Miller. "I encourage everyone to make a nomination and help us recognize and reward the individuals, organizations and companies that are leading the way to a clean, green, modern and more liveable city."
