New TTC fares approved

The TTC fare increase was approved yesterday by the Commission. It takes effect January 3, 2010.

Here's a breakdown of the fare changes, with the current (soon to be former) rates in parentheses:

Adult
Cash: $3.00 ($2.75)
Token: $2.50 ($2.25)
Weekly Pass: $36.00 ($32.25)
Regular Metropass: $121.00 ($109.00)
VIP*: $106.00 $107.00^ ($96.00)
MDP: $110.00 $111.00^ ($100.00)

Senior/Student
Cash: $2.00 ($1.85)
Ticket: $1.65 ($1.50)
Weekly Pass: $28.00 ($25.50)
Regular Metropass: $99.00 ($91.25)
MDP: $89.00 ($84.00)

Child
Cash: $0.75 ($0.70)
Ticket: $0.55 ($0.50)

Day Pass: $10.00 ($9.00)
GTA Pass (TTC Portion): $29.25 ($25.30)

* = Volume Incentive Program (not the other kind of "VIP")
^ = The TTC issued a correction for these fares shortly after the initial press release.

well, i'm walking to work all winter. forget it. i still wait just as long for 3 or 4 jam packed smelly streetcars to pass by before i get one.

i guess those useless gps and plasma screens were a "neat" addition to the stations... now i can watch all the overfull cars!

Ok, so what is MDP -- most dumb person?

The MDP discount is improving slightly. You used to save 8.3% on MDP compared to buying each month individually. Now you'll save 9.1%. If you applied the old discount, the future MDP cost would have been $111, not $110.

Yeah, an extra dollar is small potatoes, but Giambrone is making hay out of coming to riders' rescue by reducing the originally proposed Metropass increase by $5... is that much different?

An 11% fare hike, eh? Does that mean my morning commute will be 11% faster, 11% less crowded, or that there will 11% fewer disruptions in service? Not likely. Thanks for the privilege of an overcrowded and slow commute at a higher cost, TTC.

Subsequent to my post above, I see that the TTC has issued a correction. The MDP fares are in fact going to $111, not $110. Also, the VIP fare is going to $107, not $106.

WONDER IF THERE IS ANYONE IN TTC HIERARCHY WHO THINKS THAT FARE SHOULD GO DOWN & DOWN, AS COMMUTING IS A MUST FOR MAJORITY FOR EARNING LIVELIHOOD

Well... I actually think that the time for a fare increase has come, seeing that the other levels of Government have not yet been motivated to kick in enough cash to make public transit in Toronto reasonably affordable.

But ah, I remember the good old days, when we would lunge with vigor for the subway doors closing, not knowing if another train would arrive next. It sounds funny, but the regularity of service is better than it used to be. (This said after waiting for what seemed like a long time to get home tonight, but generally, it is better).

Okay, I'll admit that my real reason for accepting (approval seems too strong of a word) this current fare increase is my peeved annoyance with fumbling for all of those damned little coins at the ticket booths. If I can just throw down a $10 or $20 without anymore more fuss than absolutely required, then I am sure that everyone else behind me in the line-up will appreciate it.

Growing up in York Region, where the norm of 30 minute waits for buses DURING RUSH HOUR, annual fare hikes, and no media outlets feeling sorry for us... Well, you have no idea how good you have it.

Now if you will excuse me, I'm going to go back to playing my small violin.
