Watch NFB: God’s Lake Narrows

Editor: Spacing is pleased to continue our partnership with the National Film Board of Canada to showcase films and interactive projects from their online screening room. Julie Matlin of the NFB will be occasionally posting films here on Spacing that explore public spaces, Canadian or international cities and anything urban. The NFB is one of Canada's greatest resources. Click here to view their entire online collection.

Over the past 2 years, we at the NFB have been working on a number of interactive projects that cover a wide range of subjects. During the summer, we launched our latest project called God's Lake Narrows.

God's Lake Narrows is an interactive photo essay that features a series of images, captured by Kevin Lee Burton, of the inside and outside of homes on a reserve in and around God's River, a First Nations community. Burton takes a bold approach, and invites those who have never before visited a reserve to come on in and check it out - providing they're willing to check their preconceptions at the door.

Burton, who is one of Canada's innovative young media artists, takes us on a journey to where he grew up while providing  context by speaking of his upbringing, illuminating his own issues with his heritage and culture. What results is an intimate, and unforgettable, experience.

For more background on the project, read a post by Gisèle Gordon, a multimedia artist, writer and festival programmer based in Toronto.
