Facebook Friday Finale: Toronto Lovin’

Facebook has become an important tool for Torontonians who want to inform their fellow citizens about local issues, initiatives, and events, who enjoy discussing political viewpoints and critiquing urban infrastructure, and who are interested in brainstorming how to make Toronto a better place. Above all, however, Facebook is allowing local citizens to celebrate the simple fact that this is our city, that we are committed to its development, and that we're here to stay. Members of Actually, I Like Toronto recognize that while Toronto ...

The beauty of Barcelona

Having just returned from a two-week trip to Spain, I've come to one conclusion: Barcelona has us beat. Not only is Barcelona one of Europe's cultural hubs — boasting some of the best food, fashion, and art in the world — but their urban infrastructure is both esthetically and practically avant-garde. La Rambla is a pulsing tree-lined boulevard that runs right down the centre of the city and is an excellent example of how pedestrians rule the Spanish streets. As you can see, people occupy more than 70% of this major urban artery, while ...

The Human River outdoor screening

WHAT: Human River Outdoor Screening WHEN: Thursday, August 30th, 2007 WHERE: Trinity Bellwoods bowl This coming Thursday, the Toronto Public Space Committee's Human River and Streets to Screens campaign is hosting an educational evening in the ravine where Garrison Creek once existed. Between 6:00 and 8:30 pm, participants will walk through the trees, create sculptures, and do crafts for the Human River Walk, all while learning about the creek and urban stormwater issues. Following this, there will be an outdoor screening at 8:30 pm of Thomas Riedelsheimer's “Rivers and Tides,” a film about environmental sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. So, bring a ...

Facebook Friday: Cycle and the city

As the name suggests, every Friday Spacing profiles Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cycling has become an integral part of Torontonian culture as a form of exercise and entertainment as well as transportation; in response, a wide variety of Facebook groups are emerging that are dealing with the politics, social logistics, and general tom-foolery of urban bicycling. I Bike T.O., representing the larger Toronto-based cycling activist group (found at www.ibiketo.ca), ...

Facebook Friday: Welcome to the neighbourhood

As the name suggests, every Friday Spacing profiles Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Every neighbourhood in Toronto has a unique social fingerprint -- a history, culture, and business network -- that reflects the lives and experiences of its residents. It is therefore not surprising that the diversity of these communities is represented by a variety of existing Facebook groups. One interesting ...

Facebook Friday: Putting one foot in front of the other

As the name suggests, every Friday Spacing profiles Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Inasmuch as Torontonians differ culturally, socially, and economically, they all have one thing in common: they are all pedestrians. That is why I decided to search for Toronto-based Facebook groups that are dealing with the socio- political issues surrounding pedestrianism. Groups such as Pedestrian Sundays Kensington and Pedestrain Sundays Baldwin Village, for example, are using the social network ...

Facebook Friday: The art and obstacles of architecture

As the name suggests, every Friday Spacing profiles Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A city´s identity is largely defined by the aesthetic and functional integrity of its buildings. It is for this reason that I decided to search for Facebook groups that are informing Torontonians about, critiquing, and responding to current architectural issues. Toronto Architecture as well as Urban Toronto Forum, for example, are providing up-to-date information on new building proposals ...

Facebook Friday: Urban housing hassles

As the name suggests, every Friday Spacing profiles Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This week I searched for Toronto-based groups that are dealing with urban housing issues. While each group took a unique approach to the topic, three major themes seemed to emerge: development, revitalization, and advocacy. Of major concern to many Torontonians seems to be how our city, as it continues to grow in size and density, is being developed to sustain increased ...

Facebook Friday: Pollution prevention

As the name suggests, every Friday Spacing will profile Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This week, I searched through over 300 groups that are currently addressing Toronto pollution and smog. One over-arching theme seems to be Torontonians dedication to cheap, active, green alternatives to driving. Students in particular have been using Facebook to discuss how being environmentally friendly actually helps lighten their financial burdens. Bike2YorkU, for example, discusses the benefits ...

Facebook Friday: Getting on track with the TTC

Toronto's Facebook network has grown exponentially in the past couple years. With over half a million users to date, Torontonians form the single largest group of Facebook users in the world; and, as more people in our city join, it is becoming increasingly relevant for everyone involved. For this reason, Spacing has decided to start Facebook Fridays. Every week, we will profile Facebook groups that are using the social network to articulate their experiences and share information about Toronto. This week, I searched “Toronto transit” and “TTC” and was pleasantly surprised to discover that there were over 300 groups dedicated ...
